With yellow-tipped, bronze-red petals, 'Shock-O-Lat' is sure to draw attention. Contrasting purple-tinged stems are well-branched, offering a multitude of blooms for pollenless bouquets, while still providing abundant nectar for pollinators. The 6" flowers can be tamed down to 3" by spacing plants closely (10" apart). The edible, bittersweet petals make a pretty garnish to salads and desserts. Sunflowers are drought tolerant.
When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date.
When to start inside: 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date. Sunflowers are sensitive to root disturbance; sow in biodegradable pots that can be planted directly in the ground.
