Perennial
Height 18-24 inches
This hardy perennial herb is easy to grow and can be planted with flowers, vegetables or other herbs. Use as a border or in pots, either indoors or outside. The thin, green tube-like tops have a mild onion flavor and are used for flavoring salads, soups, stews and stir-fry. Grows well in a sunny or slightly shaded location.
SOWINGā¦Plant seeds outdoors as soon as the ground can be worked. Plant multiple seeds (10-20 seeds) within a 3 inch circle. Each seeded area should be 24 inches apart. Cover seeds with Ā¼ inch of fine soil, press down and keep soil consistently moist until seeds start to grow.
THINNINGā¦No thinning should be necessary, as chives grow best in clumps.
GERMINATIONā¦Germinates in 10 to 15 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKSā¦When plants are 4 inches tall, cut outer leaves near ground with scissors, use fresh or frozen. When in flower, the lavender blooms make a very decorative border.
