6+ foot vines
Popular melon for home garden or market. Fruits average about 30 lbs., oblong light gray green with dark veins.
SOWING…Sow seed in late spring when soil is warm or start 4-6 weeks earlier indoors. Plant 3 to 5 seeds in a ring about 2 inches across; cover with ½ inch of fine soil. Each ring is called a hill and hills should be spaced 6-8 feet apart.
THINNING…When plants are 2 inches tall, thin to 3 plants per hill.
GERMINATION…Germinates in 7 to 10 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS…Seeds are dark brown. Young vines are heat and moisture lovers and benefit from compost rich soil. When the fruit becomes the size of a softball, water only when the soil is dry. Withholding water about a week before harvest will concentrate the sugars and produce a sweeter flesh.
