The standard yellow variety with purplish coloring in the upper portion which is above ground. Has a small tap root, is fine textured with a sweet mild flavor. Rutabagas are also called Swedish or Russian Turnips.
SOWING…Plant seed outdoors as soon as soil can be worked. Plant in rows 2 ½ feet apart, spacing seed 1 inch apart in the row. Cover seed with ½ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until seeds start to grow. Good results are obtained by planting as late as the first of August.
THINNING…When plants are 1 to 2 inches tall, thin to 10 to 12 inches apart in the row.
GERMINATION…Germinates in 7 to 10 days depending on soil and temperature conditions.
REMARKS…Just before severe frost, lift the roots and store in moist sand or pits for the winter.
