Ruby Red Swiss Chard (also known as Rhubarb Chard) can replace spinach during the hot summer months. Easy to grow, the leaves can be cooked like spinach, the ribs sauteed in butter and garlic. Often used as baby greens early in the season.
SOWING…Sow seed outdoors as early as the ground can be worked. Plant in rows 18 inches apart spacing seeds 1 inch apart in the row. Cover seed with ½ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until plants start to grow.
THINNING…When plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin to 8 to 10 inches apart.
GERMINATION…Germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS…Rich in vitamins A and B. Plants are very decorative and can replace Ornamental Cabbages in fall containers.
