Swiss Chard replaces spinach during the hot summer months and is as easy to grow as beets. The leaves are usually cooked like spinach. The white midribs are excellent creamed or as a substitute for asparagus.
SOWING…Plant seed outdoors as soon as soil can be worked. Plant in rows 18 inches apart spacing seed 1 inch apart in the row. Cover seed with ½ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until seeds start to grow. May be planted throughout the summer.
THINNING…When plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin to 8 to 10 inches apart in the row.
GERMINATION…Germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and temperature conditions.
REMARKS…Rich in vitamins A and B. Make cutting of the leaves about 1 inch above the ground and new leaves from allowing continuous harvest through the season until frost.
