This variety produces a large bulb at the surface of the ground which makes an excellent vegetable with a peculiar but pleasing flavor. It is widely used in Italy and by people of Italian descent in this country.
SOWING…Plant seed in spring as soon as danger of frost is past. May be planted as late as July for fall use. Space seeds 1-2 inches apart in rows 2 feet apart and cover seeds with ¼ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until seeds start to grow.
THINNING…When plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin or transplant 1 foot apart in the row.
GERMINATION…Germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS…When the plants are half grown, blanch the bulbs by piling soil around the bottom of the plant to cover the bulbs.
