It’s been called the ‘stem turnip’ because the turnip-like tuber is really an enlargement of the stem 1-3” above the ground. The clear flesh is either white or purple, with a sweeter taste than other members of the cabbage family. Prepared raw in salad, added to soup, roasted on the grill or made into fritters, this odd looking vegetable is worth the space in your garden.

SOWING…Plant seed outdoors early in spring, as soon as the soil can be worked, 3-4” apart. Seedlings do not transplant well, so plant where they will be allowed to remain until harvest. Cover with ¼” of fine soil and water in well.

THINNING…when plants are 2” tall, thin to stand 6-8 inches apart. Eat your thinnings!

GERMINATION…1-12 days, depending on soil temperature and moisture conditions.

REMARKS…Grown as micro-greens, plant seed thickly and harvest at 2” tall. The name Kohlrabi translated from German means ‘Cabbage Turnip’.
