The original variety of non-heading type cabbage also known as Southern or Creole, this kind grows up to 2 ½ feet tall producing broad, crumpled leaves. Very popular in the South and growing in popularity in other regions. It is grown for its succulent and juicy leaves that have a mild cabbage-like flavor.
SOWING…Sow seed outdoors as early as the ground can be worked. Plant in rows 3 feet apart spacing seeds 1 inch apart and cover with ½ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge.
THINNING…When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin or transplant 2 feet apart in the row.
GERMINATION…Germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and temperature conditions.
REMARKS…May be planted in mid-summer for a late fall crop. The flavor is improved after frost. This variety will succeed where heading cabbages fail.
