Poppy Oriental Scarlet
Poppy Oriental Scarlet
Perennial
Height 3 feet
Huge cup shaped flowers are dazzling scarlet with black centers. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and will provide many years of beauty and normally needs no winter protection. For bouquets, cut flowers in bud stage.
SOWING…Poppies do not transplant well. Sow seeds where they are to grow in the garden or indoors in peat pots. Scatter seeds on soil and do not cover - poppy seeds need light to germinate. Keep seeds evenly moist until first true leaves appear.
THINNING…When plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, thin to 12 to 15 inches apart.
GERMINATION…Germinates in 7 to 10 days depending on soil and temperature conditions.
REMARKS…Blooms in late spring to early summer. Late plantings bloom following spring. Poppy flowers don’t shatter until they’ve been pollinated. If you cut one just before it is to open, sear the cut end in a flame for 10 seconds, and plunk the stem immediately into cold water, the bloom will open beautifully and last in the vase for days.
