This bean is popular in New England and the Northeast and is primarily used as a green shell bean. Plant is a bush type, 18 to 20 inches tall, branching with short runners in later stages of growth. Pods are oval, 5 to 7 inches long, stingy, bright green maturing to chamois color splashed with carmine.

SOWING…Plant seed outdoors in late spring after the ground has warmed. Do not rush planting of beans as a few cold, wet days at planting time may rot seed. Plant seeds 1 ½ inches apart in rows 2 ½ to 3 feet apart. Cover seeds with 1 ½ inch of soil, well pressed down.

THINNING…When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to 3 inches apart.

GERMINATION…Germinates in 6 to 10 days depending on soil and temperature conditions.

REMARKS…For best crop, keep free of weeds. To prevent spread of disease, do not hoe when wet. For highest quality and yield pick pods frequently. For dried use allow pods to mature and change color. Make successive plantings every 2 to 3 weeks until mid-summer.
